Bhagavad Gita As It Is
The Bhagavad Gita (or "Song of God") is one of the most important sacred texts in Hinduism and is easily the best-known. It has been quoted throughout time by scientists, poets and philosophers.
It is often called the Gita. The work was part of the epic Mahabharata. Its composition date is therefore closely linked to that of the epic, which was c. 5th-3rd centuries BCE. But there is disagreement among scholars that it was originally included in the Mahabharata texts This means that the date is older than it was c. 2nd Century BCE.
The Gita is a dialogue between warrior-prince Arjuna and the god Krishna who is his charioteer in Battle of Kurukshetra. The battle was waged between Duryodhana's relatives (the Pandavas), and Duryodhana (the Kauravas and their allies). This dialogue was read out by Sanjaya, Kauravan counselor to Dhritarashtra, the blind king. Krishna is granting Sanjaya the mystical vision to witness the battle and communicate the battle to the King.
The Kauravas and the Pandavas are closely related. There are also common family members and friends who fight on both sides for supremacy. Arjuna is astonished by all his old friends and comrades from the opposing side, turns away from participating in a battle that will bring them to death and numerous others. The dialogue between the god and the prince on right action, understanding, and ultimately , the purpose of life, is what constitutes the rest of the text.
